The history of HARIBO: from Bonn to Goldbears

HARIBO began in Bonn on 13 December 1920. Confectioner Hans Riegel started on a small scale with simple equipment and a sack of sugar. The brand name tells the story: HAns RIegel BOnn.

A bear with a past

In 1922, Riegel created the Dancing Bear, a bear-shaped fruit gum. It became the predecessor of one of the brand’s most recognisable sweets. Goldbears arrived in 1960; their name was registered as a trademark in 1967.
