Sugar-free sweets: what does the label say?

Sugar-free sweets: what does the label say?

A sweet taste without a traditional sugar recipe is what many people look for in sugar-free sweets. The front of the pack, however, is only part of the story.

Sugar-free and no added sugars

Under European rules, ‘sugar-free’ means no more than 0.5 grams of sugars per 100 grams or 100 millilitres. ‘No added sugars’ is a different claim: sugars and foods used for sweetening have not been added. Naturally occurring sugars may still be present.

Sugar-free does not automatically mean calorie-free, carbohydrate-free or fat-free. Consider the other nutrition values and the amount you plan to eat. A sugar claim is not a general promise about weight loss or suitability for diabetes.

Which sweeteners are used?

Many sugar-free sweets contain polyols. Large amounts may cause digestive discomfort, so note the laxative-effect warning. Other sweeteners have their own product information.
