History of KING peppermint

KING peppermint

Another well-known Dutch peppermint brand is KING. Although the name may suggest otherwise, this brand has nothing to do with the royal family.

This peppermint was marketed from 1902 by the Sneek-based confectionery company Tonnema. Unnamed at first; from 1922 under the name KING, an abbreviation of Quality In Nothing Equaled . The De Vries family, the driving force behind Tonnema, also managed to get the candy-loving Netherlands interested in the candy brand Rang.

Medicinal
Until a few years ago, King's peppermint rolls still contained an image of pharmacist and chemist Paul François van Hamel Roos .

In the early years of the peppermint brand, this doctor examined the quality of the candy, which was mainly popular at the time because of its medicinal effect. Peppermint was often advertised as a “stimulating” and “invigorating” medicine.

The image of the doctor was supposed to give the peppermint extra status. Every so often he tested the peppermint in his laboratory on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.

KING Atlas
The peppermint brand also released its own atlas from the mid-1930s, the KING Atlas. This was sent to them free of charge when they sent a few wrappers of peppermint.

The first was compiled by former geography lecturer GJ de Vries and the cover was designed by Jan Lavies. The KING Atlas was last published in 1996.

Peppermint brand KING is now owned by the Swedish company Cloetta.
